Téo Becher (Nancy, 1991) is interested in the relationship between nature and culture. He uses photography to capture the narrative potential of territories, revealing both their enchanting qualities and their indestructible link with human occupation. After his Charbon blanc project, through which he examined the presence of the aluminium industry in the Maurienne valley in Savoie, the photographer left documentary making to adopt a more formal approach to landscape.

The Forêt de Soignes is the focus of his new series entitled Hercynienne. He examines the contrast between the still-wild part of the forest (previously the Hercynian forest, part of the key Western European forests) and the controlled presence of humans within it, on the outskirts of Brussels. In the forest, Téo translates this ambivalence into a more formal visual language using colour filters and overlays employed in the darkroom. He redirects our gaze towards details usually drowned in the blur of the landscape. With an artisanal approach, he works with film in order to retain a more tactile relationship with the medium. He appropriates nature without restraint, through colour and form, and asks to what extent is our perception of nature conditioned by the visual conventions of education and the codes of a Western culture disconnected from it ?
