Chaque année, au terme de neuf mois de création, la Fondation Carrefour des Arts ouvre les portes de ses ateliers et présente les œuvres de ses artistes en résidence. Cette année, l’exposition LIGHTS OUT présente les travaux de Juana Bustamante, Collyns Charts, Shirley Nirina Thomas et Onur Kaymak, et raconte leur rapport intime à la lumière ainsi qu’à son absence. Ils ont choisi d'éteindre la lumière, pour mieux voir. C'est une invitation à regarder autrement ce qui se dérobe au regard.
Le fond bleu nuit des toiles de Collyns Charts englobe sa série de portraits d’artistes afrodescendants, qu’il inscrit dans l’invisible, à la croisée de deux mondes. Spiritualité, magie et symbolisme tracent ainsi les contours d’une réalité recomposée. Dans son atelier, Shirley Nirina Thomas nous invite quant à elle à plonger dans son installation « Les galeries de la Reine ». Un univers souterrain sophistiqué, au sein duquel racines, insectes, soin et sororité sont mêlés. Le noir du fusain, cette matière d’ombre et de cendre, s’impose à Onur Kaymak comme le médium idéal pour redonner une existence poétique à des objets que le monde a délaissés, et avec lesquels il crée un lien d’intimité. Enfin, de Bruxelles à Bogotá, le ciel étoilé est au cœur du travail de Juana Bustamante. Lumière et obscurité y dialoguent pour évoquer àla fois la beauté des constellations et leur vulnérabilité.

Each year, after nine months of creation, the Carrefour des Arts Foundation opens the doors of its studios and presents the works of its artists in residency. This year, the exhibition LIGHTS OUT brings together works by Juana Bustamante, Collyns Charts, Shirley Nirina Thomas and Onur Kaymak, tracing their intimate relationship with light — and with its absence. They have chosen to turn the lights out, in order to see more clearly. It is an invitation to look differently at what eludes the eye.
The deep blue-night backgrounds of Collyns Charts' canvases envelop his series of portraits of Afro-descendant artists, whom he places at the crossroads of two worlds, inscribed within the invisible. Spirituality, magic and symbolism trace the contours of a recomposed reality. In her studio, Shirley Nirina Thomas invites us to immerse ourselves in her installation Les galeries de la Reine — a sophisticated underground world in which roots, insects, care and sisterhood intertwine. The black of charcoal, that material of shadow and ash, asserts itself for Onur Kaymak as the ideal medium through which to restore a poetic existence to objects the world has cast aside, and with which he forges a bond of intimacy. Finally, from Brussels to Bogotá, the starlit sky lies at the heart ofJuana Bustamante's work. Light and darkness dialogue across that sky, evoking at once the beauty of the constellations and their fragility.

Elk jaar, na negen maanden van creatief werk, opent de Stichting Carrefour des Arts de deuren van haar ateliers en stelt de werken voor van haar kunstenaars in residentie. Dit jaar presenteert de tentoonstelling LIGHTS OUT het werk van Juana Bustamante, Collyns Charts, Shirley Nirina Thomas en Onur Kaymak, en vertelt over hun intieme verhouding tot het licht en de afwezigheid ervan. Ze kozen ervoor het licht te doven, om beter te kunnen zien. Het is een uitnodiging om anders te kijken naar wat zich aan het oog onttrekt.
De nachtblauwe achtergrond van de doeken van Collyns Charts omsluit zijn reeks portretten van Afro-descendante kunstenaars, die hij in het onzichtbare plaatst, op het kruispunt van twee werelden. Spiritualiteit, magie en symbolisme tekenen zo de contouren van een heramengestelde werkelijkheid. In haar atelier nodigt Shirley Nirina Thomas ons op haar beurt uit om onder te dompelen in haar installatie Les galeries de la Reine. Een verfijnd ondergronds universum, waarin wortels, insecten, zorg en sororiteit met elkaar verweven zijn. Het zwart van de houtskool, dat materiaal van schaduw en as, dringt zich aan Onur Kaymak op als het ideale medium om poëtisch bestaan te hergeven aan objecten die de wereld heeft achtergelaten, en waarmee hij een intieme band schept. Ten slotte staat de sterrenhemel centraal in het werk van Juana Bustamante, van Brussel tot Bogotá. Licht en duisternis treden er met elkaar in dialoog om zowel de schoonheid van de sterrenbeelden als hun kwetsbaarheid op te roepen.
