Diego Wery

The paintings of Diego Wery (Brussels, 1993) reflect an ambivalent vision of the world, somewhere between humour and drama, between seduction and repulsion. In order to deal with fundamental social issues, the artist is inspired by images from popular culture, particularly cinema, as well as from art history, which he reinterprets with a contemporary artist's eye. He turns these images into a mockery, in order to question our shortcomings, our deep malaise and our sufferings, as well as the injustices and inequalities that confront us. Expressions, emotions and body movements are exaggerated, compositions are theatrical and the grotesque and the absurd are enhanced through an expressionist language that Diego inherits from Italian mannerisms. Disembodied, suffering their fate, the characters are merely a means for Diego to convey an idea, although they retain, notably through their eyes, a part of humanity that arouses empathy.

Bright colours, to which the artist attaches great importance, are freed from representation and respond to a personal symbolism. Diego's pictorial world oscillates between the real and the imaginary, revealing a conceptual space in which he can question his fears and express his anger. One of his concerns is the theme of masculinity and virility in art history and contemporary imagery, and the place it occupies in the questioning of young men's identities. Machismo, gender inequality and hypocrisy also inspire the artist, as well as social hierarchy and ecology. Diego considers such themes with sincerity and humility, alongside the hope of disrupting prejudice and convention.
